Sarah Alston, Duchess of Somerset, Benefactress, 1631-1692

Sarah, Duchess of Somerset was a celebrated philanthropist. Brasenose was her first husbands College (married three times, her first husband was George Grimston) and she generously bequeathed various properties in Buckinghamshire and Wiltshire to fund Somerset Scholars at the College.

A portrait of the Duchess still hangs in the Hall of Brasenose College. Those looking for more information may find A Stuart Benefactress by A. Daly (published in 1973) of interest.
