The Ellesmere Society are pleased to announce this year’s guest speaker is:
Dame Eleanor Sharpston DCMG KC
Dame Eleanor Sharpston DCMG KC is a distinguished British barrister, academic and former Advocate General at the Court of Justice of the European Union. She served in that position from 2006 to 2020, the first woman appointed by the United Kingdom to that office. During those fourteen years, she delivered more than 450 Opinions across a wide variety of fields, including trade, citizenship, and the rule of law. Dame Eleanor brought a widely discussed legal challenge to the early termination of her mandate as Advocate General following Brexit, arguing that judicial independence required members of the Court to serve their full fixed terms.
A King’s Counsel and Bencher of the Middle Temple, Dame Eleanor has combined a distinguished career at the Bar with an equally distinguished academic career at the University of Cambridge and University College London. She is an Emeritus Fellow of King’s College, Cambridge and was previously joint head of Hailsham Chambers. In recognition of her outstanding contribution to justice and legal education across the UK and Europe, she was appointed a Dame Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George (DCMG).
