It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Professor Laszlo Solymar FRS, Emeritus Fellow of Brasenose College. Laszlo was a much-valued member of the College community, and he will be greatly missed by all those who knew him.

Born in Budapest in 1930, Laszlo studied at the Technical University of Budapest before moving to England in 1956 after the Hungarian Revolution. He joined Brasenose as a Fellow in Engineering in 1966, beginning a twenty-year association with the College. A highly respected academic, his pioneering work in electromagnetism earned him international recognition, including the Faraday Medal in 1992 and election as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1995. His enthusiasm for research continued long after his retirement from Oxford in 1997.

Beyond his academic achievements, Laszlo played an important part in the history of Brasenose, contributing to the discussions that eventually led to the admission of women undergraduates to the College in 1974. Although he moved to Hertford College in 1986, his association with Brasenose continued through his Emeritus Fellowship. His contributions to the College and its history will be remembered with great appreciation.

Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with Laszlo’s family, friends and former colleagues at this sad time.

We would be grateful to hear from anyone wishing to share their memories or pay tribute to Laszlo. Please send any messages to development.office@bnc.ox.ac.uk.
