Congratulations to DPhil student Aditi Upmanyu, whose story ‘Bua’ has been shortlisted for the Oxford-BNU Creative Writing Award 2026.

Aditi commented, ‘I am delighted and honoured that my story has been shortlisted for the Oxford-BNU Creative Writing Award. Earlier this year, I won the Ale Verses at College for my composition, and now, with a university-wide shortlist, I feel encouraged to continue exploring creative writing. My short story ‘Bua’, a term for a father’s sister, commemorates my aunt, whose resilience and artistic practice, shaped in the context of gendered expectations within South Asian society, have long inspired me. The story adopts an episodic structure, tracing moments from her youth through to more recent family history. I continue to recognise the privilege of being part of the Brasenose community, and the university more broadly, where such creative ethos is fostered, and students get incredible literary opportunities.’

The winner will be announced at the Award Ceremony, which will take place at the Schwarzman Centre for Humanities on 14th May 2026. Very best of luck Aditi, here’s hoping you’ll be bringing the award back to Brasenose!
