Areas of Student Support

Below are the key areas of student support where philanthropic funding is currently sought for both undergraduate and graduate students. Each fund addresses a specific need and plays an important role in ensuring that all Brasenose students can thrive academically and take full part in College life.

Bursaries and Graduate Scholarships

Brasenose offers means-tested bursaries to support undergraduate students, ensuring access to the College’s world-class education. We are particularly seeking philanthropic support for graduate scholarships, which enable the most talented students to pursue advanced study and research at the College.

Mini Bursaries and Financial Assistance

Help cover essential living costs, along with book grants, research support, and travel funding for academic and extracurricular development. These small but significant interventions make a real difference, ensuring that all students can thrive at Brasenose.

Graduate Research Allowance

Graduate students at Brasenose face a wide range of essential research costs over the course of their degrees – from laptops and specialist equipment to fieldwork, conference travel, and other academic necessities. Without additional support, these costs can limit access to opportunities and hinder the quality of their work. We seek philanthropic support to ensure every postgraduate student has the tools, resources, and flexibility to pursue their research to the highest standard and represent Brasenose on a global academic stage.

Spotlight on: Graduate Scholarships

Brasenose boasts a vibrant graduate community, reflecting the College’s rich academic heritage and steadfast commitment to fostering excellence across all disciplines. We are dedicated to creating permanent graduate scholarships that enable the most talented students to pursue advanced study and research at the College. Regrettably, a significant challenge that potential students encounter is a shortage of funding, which can lead to individuals with extraordinary potential turning down offers to study with us.

By providing support to scholarships, Brasenose can maintain our ability to attract and retain exceptional individuals, empowering them to engage in research and make significant contributions towards the progress of knowledge.

Sports and Rowing

Brasenose students competing in Oxford Blues, Varsity teams, and college-level sports such as hockey, netball, cricket, and climbing often face financial challenges covering essential costs like travel, equipment, and training. Establishing a multi-year named fund provides a lasting way to support these talented athletes, ensuring they have the resources to perform at their best and represent Brasenose with pride.

For donors wishing to support rowing specifically, contributions can be directed to the Brasenose College Boat Club. Gifts help fund the maintenance and lease of the Boathouse, the heart of rowing life at the College, sustaining a proud tradition and enabling generations of rowers to train, compete, and excel.

The Arts

Brasenose students bring the College community to life through amateur theatre and other creative projects. Supporting these initiatives helps cover the costs of sets, costumes, art supplies, and tickets for events such as the Edinburgh Fringe. Gifts in this area allow students to express themselves creatively and participate fully in these enriching experiences.

Choir and Music

Brasenose has a vibrant musical life, led by the Director of College Music and enriched by talented organ and choral scholars and music scholars. Choral and Organ Awards offer toplevel training and performance opportunities. Your support would allow us to sustain this rich musical community.

Clubs and Societies

If you wish to support a wide range of student activities, we welcome unrestricted funding in this area. Brasenose has a variety of student societies that help develop skills, provide an outlet for creative expression, or simply offer a chance to unwind. From politics, debating, and drama to the arts and much more, these groups help students find their voice and build community. Gifts of open funding allow the College to respond to the evolving needs of these societies, maximising impact across clubs and enabling students to explore new interests, develop leadership, and enrich College life for all.

The Greenland Library

Our beautiful Library, overlooking Radcliffe Square, is a vital space for learning, reflection, and discovery, open to students around the clock. Philanthropic support helps fund book grants for students, the purchase of new books, and essential maintenance, ensuring that Brasenose students always have access to the resources they need to excel. Your gift safeguards this cornerstone of College life, sustaining a place where knowledge, inspiration, and academic achievement thrive.

Clinical Medicine Fund

Clinical Medicine students in years 4 to 6 face a range of additional costs as they move into the most intensive stage of their training. From essential equipment – such as stethoscopes, lab coats, and medical texts – to international travel for electives and placements, these expenses are vital to their development but often fall outside traditional funding. We seek support to give our students the resources and opportunities they need to thrive in clinical settings and prepare for their future in medicine.
