Professor Giles Wiggs

BSc PhD Lond

Tutorial Fellow

I grew up in Dorset attending a local grammar school before undertaking my BSc in Geography and PhD at University College London. I completed a year of postdoctoral work at Coventry University before spending 12 years lecturing at the University of Sheffield. I took up my post at Oxford in 2005. My research focuses on windblown processes and geomorphology in desert environments, specialising in sand dune dynamics, emission of atmospheric dust, and human/environment interactions. I work across global drylands and undertake field explorations in southern Africa, northern Africa, South America, the USA, Central Asia, the Middle East, and Australia. I have been Head of the School of Geography and the Environment at Oxford since 2022.
