Professor Stuart West

BA Camb, PhD Imp, EMBO Membership

Senior Kurti Research Fellow

I joined Oxford in 2009 as the Professor of Evolutionary Biology, having previously held positions at the University of Edinburgh, the Smithsonian Research Institute Panama and Imperial College London.

My research examines how natural selection can lead to the diversity of life that we see around us. I am especially interested in the evolution of social behaviours, such as cooperation, altruism, spite and mutualism; and how social evolution drives major evolutionary transitions.
I use a mixture of techniques in my research, including theory, experiment and across species comparative studies. My empirical work has been on range of organisms, especially bacteria, insects, birds, fungi and mammals (including humans). I teach both evolutionary biology and scientific writing.
