Dr Dean Sheppard
MChem DPhil Oxf
Stipendiary Lecturer
I studied for my MChem degree in Oxford at Magdalen College (2008-2012) before moving to New College for a DPhil in Physical & Theoretical Chemistry under the supervision of Professor Stuart Mackenzie, which I completed in 2016. In 2019 I was appointed as the first Departmental Lecturer in Physical & Theoretical Chemistry, a specialist teaching role in the Department of Chemistry. I received a Mathematical, Physical & Life Science (MPLS) Division Teaching Award in 2022 and completed a PGCert in Teaching & Learning in Higher Education in 2023, becoming a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). I have taught for a number of colleges in Oxford over the past decade, and am currently the Tutor in Physical Chemistry at Lady Margaret Hall and Somerville College.
At Brasenose, I share responsibility for teaching undergraduate physical chemistry with Prof. Mark Wilson, from Prelims (1st Year) to Final Honours School (3rd Year).
My position at Brasenose involves teaching half of the topics of the undergraduate Physical Chemistry course. I hold tutorials for small groups of students where we discuss the lecture course material in detail and expand on their understanding. We also meet in larger groups for thematic revision classes to prepare each group of students for their respective exams.
In the Chemistry department I lecture the first-year introductory physics courses on Electrostatics and Properties of Gases, provide synoptic revision lectures to all year groups, and sit on various examination boards, as well as Chemistry Teaching Committee.
