Dr Alexander Flood

MA Oxon, MMus, PhD KCL, ARCO

Director of Music

I first came to Oxford as organ scholar at Jesus College, and read Music with John Caldwell and Guy Newbury. After graduation, I spent a year as organ scholar at St Albans Cathedral, before being appointed Assistant Organist at St Peter’s Church, St Albans. While there I pursued postgraduate study at King’s College, London, culminating in a PhD in Composition supervised by Silvina Milstein and George Benjamin.

I regularly give organ recitals in London, Oxford, and across Germany. I direct several choirs including Great Missenden Choral Society and Radlett Choir. I teach piano at Wycombe Abbey School; for five years I taught conducting, composition and music analysis at the University of Chichester; and I am now an organ tutor at several colleges in Oxford. My organ teaching aims to help organists to exploit the potential of mechanical action instruments to create stylish and expressive performances. I am also interested in aspects of music analysis, and pedagogical issues relating to teaching and learning counterpoint especially through the keyboard.
