Mike Stratton

Congratulations to Professor Sir Mike Stratton who has been awarded the 2026 Jessie Stevenson Kovalenko Medal by the National Academy of Sciences of the USA.

The Kovalenko Medal honors outstanding research in the medical sciences, in particular for Sir Mike it was in recognition of his “leadership in exploring the genome landscapes of cancer and normal cells, discovering cancer susceptibility genes that have reduced cancer incidence in high-risk individuals, somatically mutated cancer genes providing targets for new anti-cancer therapies and mutational signatures revealing the environmental, lifestyle and endogenous exposures causing cancer.”

Mike Stratton was Director of the Wellcome Sanger Institute from 2010-2023. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society and was knighted in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 2013. In 2024 he received the Royal Medal of the Royal Society. He attended Brasenose College as an undergraduate in the 1970s.
