At Brasenose, Modern Languages combines linguistic study with exploration of literature, thought and culture across Europe.

Modern Languages at Brasenose offers students the chance to study European languages, literature and culture in depth and across the widest range, from first evidence through to contemporary writing and visual culture.

We usually admit around seven students each year, with teaching that covers a wide range of fields.

Course options

The College admits students for all languages taught at Oxford, except Celtic and Portuguese, and particularly welcomes applicants for French and German.

 

Modern Languages at Brasenose may be studied:

  • as a single language (French or German);
  • as two Modern Languages (at least one of which is French or German);
  • a language with English (English and Modern Languages);
  • a language with Classics (Classics and Modern Languages);
  • a language with History (History and Modern Languages);
  • a language with Philosophy (Philosophy and Modern Languages);
  • a language with Linguistics (Modern Languages and Linguistics); or
  • a language (French or German) with European and Middle Eastern Languages.

Careers

Brasenose Modern Languages graduates have gone into a wide range of professions including the Foreign Office, education, the arts, journalism, law, interpreting, management consultancy, banking, accountancy and business. Employers value the linguistic ability, cultural understanding and communication skills developed through the course.
