We usually admit about six students each year across Classics, Classical Archaeology and Ancient History and the related joint schools – taught by tutors with expertise in Greek and Roman literature and ancient philosophy.
Applicants will need to take the Classics Admissions Test (CAT). Full details of the various pathways, entry requirements and admissions guidance are available on the central Oxford University website. A prior knowledge of Latin or Greek is not required.
There’s the option to read Classics on its own or combined with another subject as part of a joint school: Classics and English, Classics and Modern Languages, Classics and Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, or Classical Archaeology and Ancient History.
Classical Archaeology and Ancient History
The Classical Archaeology and Ancient History course combines written and physical records to investigate the Graeco-Roman world. Knowledge of ancient languages is optional and no specific A-level subjects are required. The course offers wide-ranging options for combining archaeological and historical topics, from Minoan Crete to later Byzantium.
Brasenose Classicists go on to many different careers, including teaching, publishing, the Civil Service and Foreign Office, advertising, law, journalism, computing, the arts and business. The analytical skills and clarity of thought developed through studying Classics are recognised and valued in a wide range of professions.
