When I’m not working, I enjoy…
Socialising! In Oxford, this can include going down the bar and out to a BOP, or attending formal dinners (themed ones are especially popular, such as the Burns Night formal), or catching up with my college family over Brasenose’s weekend brunch, or gathering in a friend’s room for TV and snacks. I also regularly try different societies, with themes ranging from Taylor Swift to historical fashion to ice hockey.
What’s the best part of studying at Brasenose?
This is very cheesy, but the people! We are known as the friendliest college, and I am always stopping for chats on the quads.
Another plus is its central location. I find I am very close to everything I might need, and this includes shops and places to eat as well as libraries and lecture halls. This also makes us a college with amazing views!
Favourite spot in college?
If I had to choose, I would say the library. Having a well-stocked library within college is invaluable, especially one with 24hr access. It’s a great study space, but I also love being surrounded by books and history, and the very photogenic views of the Radcliffe Camera.
What are your favourite Brasenose traditions?
Last year, I enjoyed Brasenose’s traditions for Ascension Day. The connecting door between Brasenose College and Lincoln College is opened for 5 minutes, and we go through to Lincoln College to drink ivy beer. It’s very unique and unusual, which is why it’s so appealing! I also loved the Brasenose Ball. It happens every two years, in the summer, and the college is transformed. It’s great to have a good time with everyone dressed up!
What’s your favourite aspect of your course?
I think I would have to say being exposed to lots of new ideas: I am always learning. I cover so much new ground in the reading for my weekly essays, I engage in interesting debates in tutorials, and I have even worked with archives and historical objects. My understanding of the subjects I study has really been enhanced. Something else I enjoy is that there are always opportunities meet people on my course, whether at faculty classes or social events.
What would you tell someone thinking about applying?
Above all, go for it! If you think you would like, and be well-suited to, the style of learning and living at Oxford, then it is worth applying.
A quality you think is important for someone looking to study at Oxford?
I think a strong interest in your subject is key. It’s a great motivator, and something that always shines through in applications and academic work.
