Supernumerary Fellow

I graduated from Cambridge University with a degree in Natural Sciences (Genetics), before moving to Oxford to study for a DPhil in Genetics. Whilst enjoying the academic challenges of research, I was increasingly drawn towards the patients themselves, and so I then completed a degree in Medicine at Magdalen College, Oxford.

Combining these interests, I now work as an NHS consultant of clinical haematology, whilst also pursuing research in this field. I oversee the provision of college-based teaching in clinical medicine and surgery for students in years 4-6 of the medical course.

As Brasenose medical students reach the clinical years of their course (years 4-6), I oversee the provision of weekly college-based tutorials in medicine and surgery. Typically, we will go together to review suitable patients that I have identified on the hospital wards, who are happy to be examined by students, and who have interesting clinical signs to be detected. I will watch the students as they examine the patients, help them to improve their clinical skills, and then discuss their findings. I lead the majority of the initial sessions, but as the students become more confident in their techniques, then I introduce the other members of the clinical medicine team (all of whom are also practicing clinicians or surgeons), whose skills and expertise will differ from mine, and who will therefore help to enrich the students knowledge and skills.

As the numbers of clinical students at Brasenose in each year are relatively small, I am able to get to know the students well, and I aim to tailor the teaching that is delivered to the needs of the individual students, giving many of the tutorials myself, but also calling on a large network of clinicians affiliated to the college to ensure specialist teaching can be provided as needed.

My primary role is as a clinician, but I am fortunate to also have a portion of my week allocated to research. I have published in a variety of areas, (please see my papers on Pubmed if you would like to know more):
– Development of a novel algorithm, using a machine-learning approach, which is able to predict which patients suspected of having a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) actually have this diagnosis.
– Publication of guidelines regarding the care of patients with cancer during the COVID-19 pandemic. I also published extensively on various ways in which COVID-19 affected patients with blood cancers.
– I am currently interested in the risks of abnormal iron-loading of the heart following infusion of intravenous iron.
