Happy St David’s Day from Brasenose! In the most recent instalment of our spring term’s cultural observances, Brasenose students enjoyed a bilingual St David’s Day formal dinner, commemorating the patron saint of Wales.

This month, Steward Alan Bennett retired after 39 years at Brasenose. Olivia Gordon from Oxford Today interviewed him about his time at BNC.

Professor Abigail Green, history tutor at Brasenose, is leading an exciting research project on Jewish Country Houses in Britain, which include Waddesdon Manor, Strawberry Hill, Upton House and Hughendon Manor.

At Brasenose we have optional formal dinners three times a week and occasionally we do special formals to celebrate different traditions or cultural events from around the world.

As a Chemistry student in my final year, I am undertaking my “Part II”. I have no lectures, exams or tutorials this year and have been able to specialise in what I find most interesting.

On Saturday January 27^th, Brasenose continued its great tradition of hosting Burns Night.

Last term, the post-graduate community came together to brainstorm ideas to try to help the homeless community of Oxford in small, tangible ways.

After a term at Oxford, travelling down to start university seems like a lifetime ago. To think that in October, I didn’t know all the people I have met since is unbelievable, and testament to the immersive and inclusive nature of life at Brasenose and Oxford in general.

Professor Mary Margaret McCabe will give the 10th John Ackrill Memorial Lecture at 5.00 pm on Tuesday, 24th April, in Brasenose College, Lecture Room 11. The title of her lecture will be ‘Glaucon, Gyges and the Good’. A drinks reception in the Medieval Kitchen will follow the talk.

Congratulations to Dr Ferdinand Rauch who has won the Excellence Award in Global Economic Affairs from the Kiel Institute for the World Economy.

Dr Rebecca Bowler, Nicholas Kurti Junior Research Fellow, Brasenose College, has won the 2018 Winton Award for Astronomy.

Congratulations to Ian Kiaer, tutor in Fine Art at Brasenose College, who is presenting his first solo museum exhibition in Paris, at the Musée d’Art Moderne.

As I look back on my first term at Brasenose, I can’t believe freshers’ week was only a few months ago. It feels like I’ve been at Brasenose forever, but in the best possible way – it’s amazing how quickly college began to feel like home.

Nearing the end of our autumn term, as things around College began to slow down, I noticed an increase in activity in our college Buy/Sell group Brasenose What I Have.

It’s Sunday 10^th December and I’ve just sat down on the sofa having put up the family Christmas tree. At the age of 21 the festive season seems to have lost some of the magic it once held for me, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t get excited when I start to hear the Christmas classics on the radio. Today’s unusual blanketing of snow also helped to somewhat reignite the spark.

After leaving for the airport at 2.45am, the five of us emerged from the plane at Athens airport rubbing the sleep from our eyes, and heartily prepared to take a nap as soon as we arrived at our accommodation.

The Oxford open day I attended was quite a blur. It was my first time in Oxford and wherever I walked I was given brochures, pens and was told how great each college was. I don’t really remember which colleges I walked around in. All colleges melted into one. All except Brasenose.
